How a birthday gift sparked The Torso Collection

Not every accessory is meant to disappear into the background. Some are born to take centre stage.

Where it began

Every creative idea has an origin story, but this one involves a bit of secret plotting, a milestone birthday, and an unforgettable commission.

It all began when a mutual friend approached me with a brilliant, unusual request. A group of friends wanted to pool together for a surprise 50th birthday gift for a truly wonderful woman. The fun part? The birthday girl happens to be an occasional burlesque performer, and they wanted a gift that matched her vibrant, show-stopping personality.

I couldn't resist. It was such an unusual commission that I just had to say yes. I got to work in my studio, creating a handbag shaped like a female torso. To match her burlesque roots, the original design is almost Basque-like—complete with playful nipple tassels!

It was meant to be a total one-off. In fact, I let the birthday girl enjoy being the only person in the world to own one for a good couple of years. As it turned out, that bag refused to stay a one-off. What started as a unique gift eventually grew into a series of sculptural bags celebrating confidence, creativity, and the human form.

Even though the first bag was inspired by burlesque, the idea has grown far beyond those beginnings. Today, these bags are for anyone who loves art, appreciates handcrafted pieces, and isn't afraid to carry something a little different.

I still smile every time I start a new torso bag. Each one has her own personality, and I never quite know who she's going to become until she starts taking shape.
